So it seems that winter is the best season for sunset shots in this neighborhood. A beautiful ending to the beginning of another year.
Here's one more pattern I created using iornament app. So many possibilities so little time! The only thing is it seems to be impossible to do the same one twice. So if you don't save them they are lost forever! I am now making digital quilts with the ones I just couldn't delete... Lol!
Just a post that has nothing to do with bread to make sure no one thinks that I'm turning this into a bread baking blog. I'm still as random as ever! (Wink)
Ok! This is an update to my previous post... Photo number one is the bread I salvaged. As you can see the crumb is not bad! I was afraid it would turn out gummy but after cooling the texture is much better. It probably would have been better if I hadn't messed up at all but overall I am happy with the results of this salvage operation. Much better than having to feed it to the dogs and birds! As I said in the comment on the last post, I believe it would have been very tall fluffy light textured bread if I'd done right, but oh well bake and learn! Oh yes, also the flavor was just a tiny bit tangier than the last batch I baked but hey! I like tangy sourdough!
Photo number two is a loaf I baked last week using my very own from scratch starter... I currently use two different starters, one is modified from an Amish friendship bread starter I got from a friend and the one I use for sandwich bread like the bread in the last post and the photo above. Then the starter I used for this bread is one I started from scratch and will be using to craft more artisan types of loaves! The flavor on this second type of bread is similar to a panera bread bowl. It's heavier and chewier and perfect for toast and garlic bread! Yum!
Btw, loaves I stuck in the freezer like this one taste almost fresh out of the oven even a week later!
Ok, here's my first bread only related post. I'd like to share a couple of things I am learning about the sour dough bread making process:
First is that I have gleaned a lot of helpful info from blogs and websites but I am also learning that each baker has a personalized experience and the advice they offer can be conflicting.
Second is that sour dough seems to be a lot more forgiving than normal yeast bread (made with commercial yeast). I should add here that I am assuming anyone interested enough to read this post has a basic idea of the difference between normal yeast bread and sourdough. If not there are many good resources online you can refer to and I recommend one called sourdoughhome.com.
I also should disclose that I went against the advice of the bakers and started my bread making adventure with sourdough! They all say you should get experience with commercial yeast first, but the way I think and have lived for years is that the old ways are the best, and bread has been around way longer than commercial yeast, so I wanted to learn the old way of bread making. There is just something about the simple ways that people did things for centuries before all the technology of the past 100 years even existed! I mean I love my geeky gadgets but I don't want to get dependent on technology so that I can't function without it! Any way that's how I look at things and why I wanted to skip right to the sourdough! So as I learn things I will share what I consider useful tips I stumble upon either from others wisdom or my own trial and errors... Of course this isn't going to become a bread making blog exclusively, I will continue mostly as I have always done, but for those of you who are interested I hope I can share some helpful tips that will probably be mostly what not to do tips! Lol.
So my tip number 1 is that stretch and fold works just as well as kneading and is so much less painful on my wrist and hand joints! Also it seems to make the dough rise a little faster and higher... In fact I actually let this dough rise too long and I had to re-rise it. I had to punch it down and re stretch and re fold it. I'll let you know if it affected the quality of the bread after I bake it, and if it was for the better or worse. What I've read is that it's a bad thing for regular yeast bread bc it makes it taste like sour dough... But that just might be a moot point when you are already making sourdough. I'll let you know! The accompanying photo is the dough in its final fix it rise right before I turned on the oven to bake... It is baking right now! Fingers crossed!
When I said I wanted to be an artist I had no idea that would eventually lead me into the art of sourdough bread making, but a gift of a sourdough starter kit got me headed in that direction. This is a photo of my very first batch of sourdough sandwich bread, and must say it tasted as good as it looks. I really shouldn't be all that surprised bc I do enjoy cooking and I also like to eat and the bread making process, from what I have gathered in my research, truly is an art! So as an artist I will jump in and learn hands on and possibly share a little of my new journey here, if all goes well that is. What was it Julia Child always said ? Oh yeah! Bon apetite!
I've been playing with an app called iornament lately and here are four of my favorites so far. This app is very cool but does take time to learn and develop techniques. The app creator is putting together a world expo of ornaments and I have been sending in submissions, these included. I don't know if they will be accepted for publication or not, but I keep trying.

I'm having such fun trying out new techniques and apps for creating digital art! Here's one that I made with an app called "Fragment" then superimposed it with a shot of wet glass. I like the shower door glass effect! If you'd have told me five years ago how much I would adore abstract art I would have laughed at you, but it's turning into one of my favorite types of art!
