It is a common mindset in the body of beilievers today that we need to get back to tradition; the "give me that old time religion" state of mind...
but is that really what we need according to the word of God?
Let us examine a few passages to see what God thinks about tradition...
(Col 2:8 JUB) Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the traditions of men, according to the elements of the world, and not after Christ.
Mat 15:5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, Whatever I might have helped thee with is already my offering unto God,
Mat 15:6 and now has no need to honour his father or his mother with succour. Thus ye have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.
Mat 15:7 Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,
Mat 15:8 This people draws nigh unto me with their mouth and honours me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
Mat 15:9 But in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines and commandments of men.
Mar 7:12 And ye suffer him to do no more for his father or for his mother,
Mar 7:13 invalidating the word of God with your tradition, which ye have given; and many such like things do ye.
1Pe_1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
It seems to me from the scriptures we just read that traditions of man and man's philosophies are not in line with the word of God and that He doesn't think too highly of them.
Well this is just my own take and you may not agree but I believe it is because we are prone to fall into habitual routines of "worship" and "prayer" where we can basically go into auto pilot with no true feeing from the heart...and because we have a performance based idea about how to please God it makes us feel better that we went and did what we percieve to be the requirements to "stay saved"...
but God doesn't want rites and rituals...he wants true love and worship from our hearts not out of "duty" but out of the overflow of thanksgiving to Him for the love He has for us!
Joh_4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
Joh_4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
And I also believe that God doesnt want us to fall into the trap of the traditional "Sunday" worship routine... you know the one? You go the the church every Sunday and spend an hour or two listening to a pre-chosen message or lessons and you give your tithes and offerings and you get in your car and go home and feel good because you have done your weekly duty but you didnt feel anything and it didn't apply to your life.
I don't know but somehow that just seems little bit habitual and kind of empty and I always come away wondering how God felt about that...
Not that I am saying that going to church is a bad thing, especially if you can find one where there is true worship happening, but even the best church services are only once or twice a week for a few hours and when it is over you leave and get back to "life as usual" and most people don't ever grow in the Word because that is all the Word they ever get, so they never experience freedom and victory like they should.
So what should we do then?
Well I like to let the Word of God tell me the answers...
1Co_3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
Gal_3:3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
Gal_5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
So the word seems to say that we can worship God in the Spirit right where we are, anytime because we ARE the temple... so anytime we are feeling it we can worship in truth! That is what makes it "in truth" because it is spontaneous and heartfelt! It is in Spirit because the Spirit of God dwells in us and He is always there! All day everyday not only on Sunday morning from 10-12...
Eph_4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
1Jn_4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
This kind of true worship will affect you! It will renew your mindsets and change your way of thinking so that you think more in line with the Word of God. It will build up your faith and give you strength and peace in the midst of this crooked and messed up world! It will make you stand out from the rest of the world and help you to become a testimony for God!
I believe people are hungry for the real deal and not just old worn out dusty and ineffective traditions! and I believe God is waiting for us to get a hold of this truth and share it!
Rev_2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
Amen! and God bless you~ Shelli~
